Cold room quotes for the same nominal size can differ by a multiple, because a cold room is not a product you buy off a shelf, it is a box built to a duty on a specific site. These are the seven things a refrigeration firm actually prices, why each one moves the number, and the wording to put in your enquiry so the quotes you get back are comparable.

- Cold room installation has no single honest headline price: internal volume, chill or freeze duty, panel thickness, integral or remote plant, floor and drainage, door type and site access each move the number independently.
- Work that installs, services, repairs or decommissions stationary refrigeration containing F gas for someone else must be done by a company certified by an approved body, and by individuals holding their own F gas qualification (gov.uk).
- In England it is an offence to keep food likely to support the growth of pathogenic micro-organisms above 8°C at food premises, subject to the exemptions and defences in Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013.

How much does a cold room cost to install?
There is no honest single figure, and we do not publish an invented one. The price is set by internal volume, whether it is chill or freeze, panel thickness, whether the plant is integral or remote, the floor and drainage, the door type and traffic, and how hard the site is to install into. Two rooms of the same size on different sites can differ by a multiple. Get quotes for your actual job.
Is a freezer room more expensive than a chill room?
Yes, and by a step rather than a margin. For the same internal volume a freezer room typically needs thicker insulation, an insulated floor to stop the ground beneath freezing and heaving, defrost provision and drainage, and more refrigeration duty. If chilling meets your operation, chilling costs less to install and less to run.
Does the company installing my cold room have to be certified?
Yes. gov.uk requires a company, including sole traders, to be certified by an approved body to install, repair, maintain or decommission stationary refrigeration containing F gas operated by others, and requires the individuals doing the work to hold their own F gas qualifications. Working with F gas without the correct certification is against the law. Ask for the certificate number and keep it with your records.
What temperature does a chill room have to run at?
In England it is an offence under Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013 to keep food likely to support the growth of pathogenic micro-organisms above 8°C at food premises, subject to the exemptions and defences in that Schedule. That is a ceiling, not a target: operators normally run colder to leave margin, and product labels can specify stricter storage. Check the regulations that apply in your nation.
What ongoing costs come with a cold room?
Electricity, servicing, and compliance. F gas leak checks are required at intervals set by the carbon dioxide equivalent of the system charge, from at least every 12 months at 5 tonnes CO2 equivalent upwards, leaks must be repaired and retested within a month, and records must be kept for 5 years where the charge is 5 tonnes CO2 equivalent or more. Thicker panels and correctly sized plant reduce the electricity line for the life of the room.
